Two years ago today, my beloved friend, Phoebe Snow, had the stroke that eventually took her life a year-and-a-half later. For me, today is the day we lost her. I love you, Phoebe, and try each day to accept how happy you are being with your daughter for eternity in Heaven.

Yes, I flew back from NY in time for this momentous occasion. Marlo couldn't come because the would have had to have missed four performances, but the rest of the family was there beaming. St. Jude is my favorite charity. They have been cited as using the highest percentage of every dollar toward St. Jude. Danny Thomas said, "No child should die in the dawn of life," and he founded St. Jude by literally begging for money. It now costs $1.7 million a day to run, and NO PATIENT OR FAMILY PAYS ANYTHING--including food and housing and transportation.

Phil Donahue, Terre Thomas and Tony Thomas emceed, and the event was chaired by Terre and Robert Ellis. It was magnificent, with entertainment by Tony Bennett and Ray Romano. It was sold out, and the video by Marlo talking about her father brought everyone to tears. It was followed by video clips of Danny, and each guest had a chocolate "Danny" cigar on his or her plate. I felt Danny and Rose Marie's presence all evening.

I love NY any time of the year, even when it is 13 degrees. I flew in for Lucie Arnaz' opening of her "Latin Roots' show at Feinstein's at the Regency, and also to see Marlo Thomas in "Relatively Speaking" on Broadway, where she stars in Elaine May's one-act play. It is part of a trilogy. The other two one-cats are by Woody Allen and Ethan Coen. MARLO DESERVES THE TONY AWARD! She IS the entire evening, and it is her best work ever. So there. After I saw the play, we went to a little place in the theatre district called Trecolore, a family-owned Italian. I urge you to try it.

Her ever-faithful Ron Abel, THE conductor and Lucie put together an amazing show about, well, her "Latin Roots." William Morris Chairman Emeritus Norman Brokaw's beautiful dog, Lilly, passed away recently, and it was a great loss to him and his family. His beloved long-time client, Kim Novak, who spends much of her time painting (which was always her first love) surprised him with a portrait of Lilly that she had done. Norman was so excited that he called in a picture hanger right that second and Kim "rearranged" his wall photos for him and they installed Lilly. It was a real pleasure to be a part of it.

It was a gorgeous night at Brindell Gottleib's French Chateau in Bel Air. "Angels" greeted you at the door with cocktails, and then you entered a fantasy universe. A live woman in a plastic bubble was floating in the swimming pool. Dancers were placed around the property on modernistic, bold art pieces. The front driveway was transformed to an elegant palace to honor Irena and Mike. Larry King presented the award to Mike, and John Emerson presented to Irena for all the good work they do in the community and the world. We've all been to hundreds of these evenings, but this one will stand out as one of the best.

Last night, as part of the American Cinematheque festival, Henry Jaglom's "Eating" was honored. The film came out 20 years ago, and was the first big screen movie to tackle food and women's body images. It is as brilliant today as it was 20 years ago. Now we frequently see starlets or stars with their skeletal selves in tabloids. But back then, it was never talked about. Women suffered in silence. I absolutely believe that this movie opened the conversation about this very dangerous problem and has saved lives. It was really fun watching it sitting next to Henry. I had seen in three times when it came out. God knows how many times he's seen it, but neither of us had seen it in a very long time. We sighed when Gwen Welles came on screen and we remembered her suffering and death from breast cancer. We gasped when the breathtakingly beautiful Frances Bergen, Candy's late mother, sang by the piano. We relived so much of our lives in that two-hour period last night. When it was over I turned to Henry and said, "It was every bit as brilliant as it was 20 years ago." He said, "I'm just shocked. It really held up. This is a very powerful experience for me." A number of the actresses who were in the film joined Henry on stage, including Mary Crosby.

One of my favorite people in the world, Rona Barrett, lives in the Santa Ynez Valley. She has been there for over 20 years, and she and her husband, Dan, are living the most wonderful life. Rona is spending her time working on the Rona Barrett Foundation that is going to build new, special senior housing developments. This is her dream, and it's about to become a reality. What a fantastic thing to do.
We had lunch at Louie's at the Upham Hotel--one of my secret spots in Santa Barbara. Usually I go right to La Super-Rica, but for Rona I went "high end."

He had us all write something to Lesley for a special electronic guest book; the evening was shot on tape, AND there was a photo studio set up by Bob, who, among other things, is a photographer. Rachael Worby, the former conductor of the Pasadena Pops believes that music should be an emotional ride encompassing all forms. Hence, she left them and formed her own orchestra, MUSE/IQUE. She took with her most of the sponsors, and hand-picked the players she wanted in her orchestra. It debuted on the lawn in front of Beckman Hall at Cal Tech, and was a glorious evening with legend Jessye Norman. Miss Norman sang Ellington, spirituals, Leonard Bernstein, and more, and received several standing ovations. Angela Bassett made a surprise appearance to recite, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," and new works were premiered from young composers Peter Knell and Ben Lear.

I'VE NEVER NEEDED A VACATION MORE IN MY LIFE. Truthfully, I've had two years of Hell, and not sat down for a second, unless I was so down I couldn't get up. My dear, kind, loving friends, Lucie Arnaz and Larry Luckinbill rented a house on the water on Maui for a month and said, "Come on over." I did. And all we did was laugh, swim, nap, cook, read, and eat. It was a prescription for better health that came from God.

One night we (Lucie, Larry, and his very cool son Nick) went to see Willie Kay, now the most famous entertainer on the islands. He is 100% full-blooded Hawaiian, who packs them in at Mulligan's on the Blue, a club on a golf course in Maui. He can sing anything from rock, to country, to opera, and plays all genres on guitar and ukelele. He is one of the finest musicians I have ever seen. Of course, Lucie (Hawaiian name Luke-pronounced Loo-Kay) and I have purchased ukeleles and are working on duets.
Larry, who is a true renaissance man, took us to Makena Beach where we survived the undertow and thrived. Then we went to the Grand Wailea and played in their pools--many pools--with slides, currents, rope drops, bridges, bars, volleyball nets--and that was for the kids (all except the bar, of course). We joined the kids. P.S. NEVER go on the big slide.
The sunsets and mornings were fantastic, and the bird watching from their house was mesmerizing. It was one of the most enchanting, glorious vacations I've ever had. I love them so.

HAWAIIAN COOKING TIP FROM LUCIE---THE MAUI HOISIN DOG: BBQ Hebrew National hot dogs well done. Condiments--Hoisin, Fresh Pineapple, Chopped Green Onions and Dijon Mustard. You simply have not lived unless you've had a Hoisin Dog.

I'M IN LOVE WITH WHOOPI GOLDBERG'S TOILET

It was love at first site and it costs between $5000-$6000. Whoops! It's by TOTO. It has a soft, heated seat, a washlet feature that washes you "after," it flushes by itself---it does anything you want it to do. Its seat is elongated to match your "seat." It is the most comfortable place you can ever sit. I was hooked. I soon discovered they had lower-priced models if you chose to wipe and flush yourself!! From that day forward, I was hooked. I spotted them in select airports, restaurants, placed in movies as products---feature stories were done on them--even Whoopi showed hers to Oprah on TV.

Then one day I had to use the bathroom at a friend's house. I walked into the guest bath without taking much notice. I sat down. Oh my God. My bottom could tell right away that something special was happening. It was the TOTO! I went insane!!!! The toilet was hitting home. I could no longer wait. It was a sign. I had to have it.

The other day I was in the ladies room at Bouchon in Beverly Hills. I opened the door to the stall and there it was. But this time I was calm. No envy. I now have my own. Thank you, Whoopi. Thank you, Ellen/

FREE SEATING IN BEVERLY HILLS WITH VALERIE HARPER

Valerie Harper and I like to eat lunch at the first booth on the right at La Scala. We've been doing it for years, and we know that if one of us arrives before 11:59 a.m., we can sit and hold the booth. After 12 pm, La Scala makes you wait to be seated until your whole party is there. You stand as you wait, watching the precious booths being taken, one by one, as you wait for your late guest/guests. I know you know what I'm talking about. WELL, THEY HAVE A NEW POLICY. If you come in ANY time before 12, and you are the only one there, you cannot sit in a booth until one more person arrives. Therefore, if you are a party of three, and the second one arrives, you CAN go to the booth and wait. I WILL MAKE NOTE OF THIS.

Anyway, Valerie and I love to talk. We solve all the problems of the world in each lunch. But by 1:30 pm, if you are still in your booth, people glare at you like they want you dead. If you dare to linger over coffee and/or dessert, they start to hover over you like killer hawks. So we left, but needed another place to sit down. If we chose to go to another establishment, we'd either have to order another lunch, or two iced teas for about $15. "No," I said. "There must be a way to sit down for free in Beverly Hills."

We turned left as we left and I spotted the slightly new shop, Pom Pom, next door. In front they were displaying two padded lawn chairs. Perfect. We sat in the display and kept talking. After a while, people began to stare so we aimed for another place. I remembered the park next to the Montage Hotel. Off we went, and found a number of lovely tables and chairs to occupy. Now I realized we were onto something. Where else in Beverly Hills could we pull this off?

Our next stop was James Perse on Canon. Valerie wanted to buy her husband, Tony, a present. Neither one of us had ever been in the shop, but as soon as we walked in, we noticed a beautifully landscaped inner courtyard with fabulous white lounge chairs that beckoned to us. She picked out the shirt she wanted, and then instead of going to the pay area, we simply walked to the courtyard and landed on the lounges. The sun was shining, horsetail plants and desert grasses were swaying, and we had found place No. 3 to land. We were going to stay for awhile.

Some time later, as we were walking toward the car, I noticed a cool bench in front of E. Baldi. "Do we dare?" I asked. You guessed it. We sat down again. BY THIS TIME WE REALIZED THAT WE HAD BEEN SITTING IN FREE CHAIRS FOR THREE AND A HALF HOURS, AND WE HAD ONLY COVERED THE OPPORTUNITIES ON CANON! Who knows what the other streets would have for us. As you can tell, I love trying restaurants. I am so insane about food and wine, that I have, for years, gone to the Culinary Institute of America in Napa to study once a year. I had never checked out the Hungry Cat, and had heard mixed things about it. Well, I really liked it. It's impossible to find; has no signage except for hidden letters on a window; and decor that looks like a jail cell. BUT, it has David Lentz' food. If you go at lunch and don't order a caviar sandwich (only kidding...it doesn't exist but perhaps he should create one...) the food is not that expensive. I ordered a Watermelon and Heirloom Tomato Salad with Feta, Red Onions, and Arugula, which was sensational--and only $10.
Wonderful Andrea, the most successful cabaret singer in the country, had the HC Cobb which had fresh shrimp, tuna and crab in addition to all the regular Cobb salad ingredients. When she was through, there wasn't even a remnant on the plate. $12!

I had the privilege of being the "handler" for President and Mrs. Ford one night at an awards event. I was with them from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. They were two of the nicest, warmest, most unpretentious people you could ever hope to meet. They were both up in years, so I took them to nap/rest around 6:30, to allow them to

be fresher for the dinner at 7:30. I had an opportunity to thank her for being so candid, honest, and courageous. I can think of no First Lady who could compare to her in those areas. She never hid anything that was important to her. Thank you, dear Betty, for the help you gave to cancer patients, to addicts---for all these lives you saved and will continue to save.

After being so disappointed by my first visit to the Papaya King on Wilcox (as opposed to their truck, which no longer exists), I went back today to check it out. THERE WAS NO ONE WAITING IN FRONT, AND ONLY THREE PEOPLE WERE INSIDE. The word is out that the dogs just aren't what they should be. I said it before, and I'll say it again---YOU CANNOT GRILL A DOG ON ALUMINUM FOIL. Do they think they need to be soul-free in LA because we have surfers here? Did they dum down for L.A? Without the accumulated grill grease ( New Yorkers understand what I'm talking about)--you have nothing. Look at the Original Tommy's on R

Today I was driving home from lunch at "Turn Out the Lights" came on the radio. I was taken back to that night, many years ago, when I sat in the balmy air watching him in his white suit singing away at the Greek Theatre. He was simply the sexiest being I had ever seen.......that tight suit......his taut build.....his moves in all the right places.......that dreamy voice.....handsome face.....gorgeous teeth. DINNER WITH TOP CHEFS ANTONIA AND JAMIE

I have had the pleasure recently of getting to know JAMIE LAUREN. I think she is a really gifted chef. If you want to see for yourself, she has consulted with the about-to-open restaurant VODVIL on Fairfax. It will be her American comfort menu. Last night Jamie, ELIZABETH KEENER and I went to ANTONIA LOFASO'S new restaurant, BLACK MARKET. It's in the old Wine Bistro space on Ventura near Laurel Canyon, and it has been completely transformed into a hip gastropub with a sensational beer, ale and wine list ( as well as cocktails, of course), and tons of small plates of goodies. One thing I was shocked to have tried was the Alligator Hot Dog. I try not to eat meat, but I had to taste. I liked it! I loved her Dill Chips with Malt Vinegar Aioli and the Lemon Pepper Shrimp with Lemon Aioli. There was so much to try----a salad of Escarole, Anchovies, White Beans, Parmigiano and Sherry Vinegar; a Shaved Fennel and Watermelon Salad with Goat's Milk Feta, Watermelon Radish and Tarragon, plus her signature dish, Crispy Collard Greens, Benton's Ham, Cheese Grits, and a Soft Egg. The place is really cool.

TRANSFORMERS--YEP, I SAW IT

Why did I see the new TRANSFORMERS you might ask? I was begged by a friend to accompany him to the screening. Repeatedly. I caved. As I walked into the always-freezing big theatre at Paramount, armed with sweatshirts and lap robes, I settled into the dark. For the next two and a half hours, I was bombarded by the noise of the sound of the movie, and endless battles between some machines. Along the way I spotted Frances McDormand (and felt sorry for her, but then I thought she was probably happy with the check she received), Josh Duhamel, and Shia LaBoeuf. Why does anyone put Shia in action movies? He has no shoulders. For frosting, we were introduced to Rosie Huntington-Whitely, who was absolutely fine. The reviewers are ripping her apart because she's an easy target. Get those chips of your shoulders (at least you have shoulders.)

You know what? For two and a half hours I enjoyed myself. I escaped from our troubled world. Did I understand the plot? Sort of. Did I care? No. I had a good time.

PLAYA RESTAURANT ON BEVERLY

I have always been a fan of John Sedlar, and have been going to his restaurants since the first one in Manhattan Beach. I believe he is an artist, and, without question, "plates" his dishes more beautifully than any chef. Each one looks like a painting. Please notice the plating of a tamale comprised of wild mushroom duxelles dumplings and filet with bearnaise sauce on a "Clockwork Orange" plate.....It was astonishingly good. Next up was the Arepas Caracas--corncakes with shrimp, mango and chiles---just sensational.

THEN IT ALL TOOK A DIVE. The waiter pushed something called Maize Bombay Taj--pork belly confit, chili-lime jicama, mango pickle on a crisp with raita cocktail vinaigrette. It sounds great--right? It's not. They are not plated well-enough to relate to each other so you end up tasting each ingredient separately. The crisp is way to thin and hold nothing together, and, simply, that combination of tastes doesn't work.

The bar is hot; the decor is great; the drinks are cool; and IT IS SO LOUD YOU CAN'T TALK OR HEAR. I would go back at 5 in the afternoon for Tito's Vodka and the apps I loved. Then I'm outta there before the din takes over.

It has long been the "home" for stars who abuse prescription medication, but in the back is a counter and booths that are right out of the 40s-50s. Is the food good? Over 30 years she has collected the most famous movie costumes in history--4000 pieces--and, at her own expense, maintained them. Let me emphasize 30 years because that's how long she has been asking Hollywood Guilds, The Motion Picture Academy, studios, and wealthy execs, producers and directors to fund a museum. Everyone has turned her down, and now she's made the very difficult decision to sell them. I am personally heartbroken for her, and furious at the entire industry. There are so many treasures--Marilyn Monroe's white dress, Joan Crawford waitress uniform, Audrey's "My Fair Lady" outfit, Julie from "Sound of Music," Garbo, Hepburn, Judy Garland, "Gigi," Brando---I can't possibly touch the surface of what she has. Princess Alexandra Dwek the First, was given an extraordinary birthday dinner by her friend, Danielle Del. For those of you who know Alexandra well, you know that caviar and truffles are her best friends---culinarily speaking---and why not? They are both fabulous. You will see lots of party pictures, including the beautiful table, the cavair eggs (like L'Orangerie), as well as the adorable party favor of the Royal Wedding deck of cards personally purchased by Danielle at Westminster Abbey. I'm sorry I didn't photograph the truffle pizza hors d'oeuvres, but just take my word for it.

Both Alexandra and Danielle have terrific style and taste, and the evening was glorious.

It's a very small group that meets each year, but this year we added two "virgins".......Jesse Tyler Ferguson of "Modern Family" and his boyfriend, Justin, who just graduated law school. Melissa, Jason and Cooper rounded out the family, with Conrad Hitchcock, (Melissa's semi-permanent houseguest) attending his first Passover as a Jew. He was called "New Jew," because about a month ago he found out that his mother was Jewish, and now he's taking classes.

I saw The Apple Sisters the other night at Largo at the Coronet, and you must rush to their next show, April 20th. They are three singer/comediennes who are "from the 40s," and they do different variety shows. There are skits, running gags, improvs, and terrific singing. It is campy fun, and a wonderful way to spend an evening.

The Apple Sisters were created by three women who met in acting/improv classes in New York, and their act has been wowing them on the comedy circuit. Kimmy Gatewood, Rebekka Johnson, and Sarah Drew each have their characters and they knock it out of the park. Don't miss them. The LA Times and all the reviewers in the major cities love them!

Gracious, and REALLY funny, Kathy Hilton opened up her gorgeous home for a dinner for Julie Araskog. Julie is now a law student at Notre Dame, and we all wanted to see her on her brief return to LA. Linda Thompson, showed her new ring that looks very much like the Princess Diana ring. KTLA's Wendy Burch led an impromptu discussion about the state of women. Danielle Del, Robyn Steinberg, Tracy Danza, Donna Antebi, Nancy Davis, and Dede Binder-Goldsmith all added to the festivities. Kathy served a home-made Mexican buffet, and I just want to add that her house took four years to complete (renovation and addition) and it is done in the most exquisite, elegant, beautiful taste---not over-the-top AT ALL.

I was her manager when she got "Victor, Victoria," and that generates many happy memories. It was fantastic seeing Blake interviewed by Walter Mirisch on stage. What respect they commanded. One was just in awe of the Hollywood history. It was a great night.

THE ADVENTURES OF RUNNING SPRINGS

Leon Schneider and his sister, Susan Fedder, are two of the kindest, most generous people on earth. They hosted Ellen Weston and me at Leon's Running Springs home this weekend. Simply put, Leon's property is like a private national park. It's approximately five acres, and Leon put 70,000 feet (!) of sod on it. He built a gigantic home, a gigantic guest house, a barn, gym and caretaker's building, as well as ponds, a corral, a million bathrooms (very important) and flat screens and fireplaces in every room. Leon is a personal injury attorney in Beverly Hills, who is married to the beautiful Elena, and Susan is a very successful realtor with Coldwell Banker.
Ellen was the former v-p production of CBS Films, is a respected TV writer/producer, and she's written the book for the new Broadway musical "Josephine," based on the life of Josephine Baker.
But we discussed none of those things. This was Kids on Parade (us) with boats, drums, pool tables, a singing deer, pin ball machines, the USC game and BBQs......and multiple meals at the Old Country Diner. What I love about Running Springs is that no one goes there. They're too busy going to Arrowhead and Big Bear. We were totally silly all weekend and in our own world.
What a blessing this respite was. THANK YOU----as for the pictures, they are totally random. It's all at Leon's house or on the lake at Big Bear. Susan Fedder has the long, dark hair. You'll figure out Leon. Ellen is the one who isn't me!

NORMAN BROKAW-CHAIRMAN EMERITUS OF WME

Norman Brokaw, a true gentleman and one of my favorite people ever, has moved his office out of the William Morris building to one across the street in yet another building that had been owned by WM. Norman was the last WM employee to move out of that building. He started at WM in 1943 when he was 18, and made $25 a week (take home $17.50). He lived with a Murphy bed in a place for $65 a week. He's now chairman emeritus and WM sold three buildings in Bev Hills for $43 million. Congratulations Norman. He also just received the Governors Award from the TV Academy, the first agent to ever do so. Because of Danny Thomas and Bill Cosby, Norman packaged legendary TV shows. He has also represented three US presidents, Barbara Walters, Nancy Pelosi, Susan Hayward, Barbara Stanwyck, Clint Eastwood, Natalie Wood, and his long-time client (46 years) Kim Novak. Note her self-portrait on the wall.

His new office is just gorgeous, with big windows overlooking trees, his own conference room, and plenty of room for his signed photos. Now 83, Norman is still a dapper, brilliant gentleman. For cufflinks, he alternates between the gold William Morris cufflinks he got on his 30th anniversary of being an agent, and the sapphire presidential seal cufflinks that he was given by President Ford.

The private room and bar at Soho House were the site of a sensational Girls' Night Out birthday for our friend Danielle Del. Danielle is a talent manager, and is married to the adorable "Ernie the Attorney" Ernie Del. The martinis and Manolos were flowing freely as we partied into the night. Off the top of my head.......Dagny Dubelko, Dede Binder Goldsmith, Donna Antebi, Julie Araskog, Alexandra Dwek, Lisa Franchot (whose photographs you see here), Anne Kopelson, Carrie Wiatt, Joyce Arad, Tracy Danza.....and the beat goes on. The food was terrific, by the way.

KIM NOVAK HONORED AT AMERICAN CINEMATHEQUE

Over 700 people showed up at the Egyptian Theatre for a sold out "Platinum Tribute" to Kim Novak celebrating Sony's release of "The Kim Novak Boxed Collection" DVD set. There was a private reception for Kim earlier at the Essex Public House on Hollywood Blvd., and then we hid in the balcony to watch "Bell, Book & Candle." Kim's husband, Dr. Robert Malloy and Stephen Rebello, the moderator for the night joined us (of course). Poor Cinematheque had to turn away so many people.....

When Kim was introduced she received a two-minute standing ovation, and her Q&A, also moderated by Mary Melton of Los Angeles Magazine, was an emotional, moving, revealing and funny event. It was truly a love fest from both sides. After the event we went to Cut at the Beverly Wilshire, where the martinis flowed along with the lobster, steak, and extra appetizers from Wolfgang. Everyone at CUT was amazing to us. It DOES have the best food in the city. Thanks to Sony, American Cinematheque, Los Angeles Magazine, and mPRm. This event was one for the record books. Finally people got to see the real Kim, the warm, funny, intelligent, luminous legend.

My favorite movie star of all time, Kim Novak, will be at the American Cinematheque's celebration honoring her and Sony's release of "The Kim Novak Collection" boxed set on July 30th at Egyptian Theatre. They will be screening her movies for four days, but opening night is "Bell, Book & Candle," followed by a Q&A with Kim. She loves that movie. After the Q&A they will show "Pal Joey." (She didn't enjoy playing dumb blonde Linda English and will readily tell you.) Her Vanity Fair story will be in the October magazine. It's VERY rare for her to leave her ranch, but she's proud of her work and the recognition it continues to get, and is pleased with the "Collection."

Actress Tanna Frederick, founder of Save Our Surf, along with co-chairs PT Townend and Shaun Thomson hosted a wonderful benefit honoring the first anniversary of the charity. Project Save Our Surf benefits our oceans and preserving the marine eco-systems, and many well-known surfers and celebrities are members. We knew it was near the end when they hired Kara DioGuardi as a fourth judge. It's not that she doesn't have the musical knowledge, it's just that it totally changed the balance and timing of the show. Then the producers were foolish, and didn't give Paula the money she wanted. That was the death knell. Along comes Ellen, someone I like a lot and watch every day. BUT "Idol" is not the right venue for her gifts. "Idol" has been destroyed. Adam Lambert is probably the last real star they will ever create, and create is the wrong word. The talent is his. They just gave him a platform. THE ONLY THING IDOL CAN DO IS FIRE ALL FOUR JUDGES AND COME UP WITH NEW, HOT ONES, and even then, it will be touch and go. This year's contestants are all forgettable, with the exception of Crystal, who should be quite successful.

I love her new CD. Lucie did a petite show at Barnes and Noble in NYC to promote it the other night and it was great. I bookended the show with Gray's Papaya in front and PJ Clarke's after. There is nothing better than walking in NY on a gorgeous night. I went from 56th to 68th under the stars around Midnight. I certainly wouldn't do that alone in LA!

And, by the way, this is a picture of a 3' x 3' poster I had to surreptitiously carry on the streets of NY.

According to friends who saw her last one-woman play in New York, she was equally brilliant, even though she was physically weak and had to hold her script. Lynn: I'm sorry your husband was a pig and had a child with your assistant; I'm sorry Universal fired you from your TV series because you wanted to breast-feed your baby on the lot. You rose above all of it and lived a life with integrity.

I adored John Forsythe. He was always the perfect gentleman. As soon as he was cast in "Dynasty" everyone fell in love with him. Since I was on that set A LOT, we knew each other quite well. At the height of "Dynasty's" hysteria, Aaron and Candy Spelling rented out the gigantic room at Chasen's for New Year's Eve. Every star from "Dynasty" was there, and the Spellings even put in a red carpet for entrances. An orchestra played the "Dynasty" theme each time a cast member entered. It was a black-tie extravaganza, and at one point I found myself dancing with John. It was one of those dream-sequence moments as I looked into his beautiful eyes, the music swirling around us, his tux tailored to perfection......I WILL TREASURE IT ALWAYS. God bless you, John.

Congratulations to Lou Moore, Wallis Annenberg and all the people who have worked so tirelessly on the project to convert the old Beverly Hills Post Office building between Canon and Crescent into a world-class performing arts center. There will be the Goldsmith Theatre, music, dance, and a children's theatre, along with a sculpture garden, a terrace, a cafe, and children's classrooms. I think this project will become the MOST IMPORTANT project EVER done in Beverly Hills. Architect Zoltan Pali told me, "We are starting to build the underground garage and laying all the electrical. That will take us months, but it's the first step. You can't begin the buildings without this step."

Get rid of Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman. Fire new director Hamish Hamilton....missed close-ups, wrong cutaways, half the time you couldn't see the star's face on an entrance. On In Memoriam opening he used a long shot so you missed the first three people who died. And to put Michael Jackson on and NOT Farrah Fawcett! She's done more movies than he, so what a lame excuse it was to say that they omitted her because her success was more in TV. And a stupid horror tribute? Where was the dignity and grace of last year's show? It went with Mark and Conlon. As for ratings they lucked out with the presence of "Avatar." A blockbuster movie year helps ratings, and ABC's ads for the Cyrus-Lautner-Efron hang worked, too. No one begrudges trying to widen a base. Ratings are important, but not at the sacrifice of dignity. And everyone should stop complaining that Oscars shows are long and boring. They ARE. So What? People deserve their due and they have a lot of awards to present. We just want to dish and eat anyway. Congrats to all winners!

And Charlize??? I'm wearing that dress to every dinner party, football game, pajama party----even Joan Rivers' house. (not kidding) Thanks for the ammunition.

Daphna Ziman opened her lovely backyard for a special 50th birthday party for Shawn King. It was a pink theme, and I actually created a unique drink for the party called "The Shawnie." It was a very touching birthday because we went around the room and each woman told Shawn how much she meant to them, or touched their life. I told Shawn I never really liked her.....

Resnick, clearly moved by Shapiro's work, wanted to bring a spiritually uplifting speaker to her friends. Shapiro has written two novels and a best-selling memoir, "Slow Motion," and "Devotion" is her personal story of her quest for faith and meaning. A lithe, pretty blonde from Connecticut, Shaprio mesmerized the audience with readings from her book---and with that audience of powerhouse women it was quite a feat. You could have heard a pin drop. Had two fabulous trips. Stayed in Joan Rivers' apartment (the week of the "Celebrity Apprentice" finals!) She's the best hostess ever. Saw "God of Carnage" with Joely Fisher, and was totally knocked out. Not since the original Uta Hagen performance of "Virginia Woolf" have I been this excited. RUN to see it. Ate everywhere like Arturo's Pizza, Grey's Papaya, Katz' Deli, and Patsy's. I don't care about Per Se or Le Cirque any more. I want NY FOOD. Went with legendary singer Phoebe Snow who was honored by the Martha Graham Dance Company. (See photo with Paula Zahn and her friend Sue Shalom.) Then went to Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld's prestigious Innocence Project Awards where Phoebe sang. (See photo with the amazing crime couple Dr. Michael Baden, who is performing David Carradine's autopsy as you read this, and his wife, lawyer Linda Kenney Baden--the one who got the hung jury for Phil Spector who is now representing alleged murderer Casey Anthony.) The Innocence Project uses DNA to have innocent convicted people released from prison.

Henry Jaglom's "Irene in Time"

One of my favorite people and directors is Henry Jaglom. I love his style, his sensitivity, his creativity, and his life force. I love Henry himself. He always seens to be present at important times in my life, and I associate him with my fathers. My mother has been married four times. Two out of the four I really loved. One was Bio-Dad; the other was Step-Dad 1. Henry held me as I cried over losing Step-Dad 1 when we were huddled in the back of the Gardenia. When he screened "Irene in Time" it was on the day that would have been Bio-Dad's 100th birthday, and I had spent some time at the cemetery. And wouldn't you know it--"Irene in Time" has to do with fathers.

I think Henry makes movies for intelligent, thoughtful adults. Long may he reign! His new movie, "Irene in Time," stars Tanna Frederick, Victoria Tennant, and Andrea Marcovicci. (What an actress Andrea is. We're so used to hearing her sing.) It is about little girls and their fathers, and how even as adults our perception of who or what a father was to us can either enhance or wreck our lives. Henry's more recent movies have "opened up" more in locations, rather than just being women sitting around a table talking. But there is plenty of that in this movie (which I love), as well as lots of men at their gambling activities acting as contrasts to the women. Throughout the movie are performances of Harriet Schock's music by Tanna Frederick and Harriet, as well as a song performed by Andrea and written by Henry and Tanna. This movie held me all the way, and I LOVED LOVED the score.
Tanna Frederick, who garnered rave reviews for her last film, is a very fearless actress who isn't afraid to annoy you with her character, or pull you in until your heart breaks. She's unforgettable. Henry's two children, Sabrina and Simon do cameo appearances. Simon is very funny, and Sabrina just could be a great big movie star if guided correctly.

West Side Story--LA style

I went to the Actors' Fun Tony Awards party to see the east coast feed. I sat with Carol Lawrence, Chita Rivera, and George Chakiris. Later on we went to Joe Tremaine's house (the amazing choreographer) and DeDe Wood (another genius choreographer) was there. So was former Tony-nominee for "Fosse" Valarie Pettiford, and Chita's daughter Lisa Mordente. It was quite bizarre sitting with the REAL "West Side Story" people, while the new, really dreadful (my opinion and I won't share the others' comments on the revival) "West Side Story" was being presented at this year's Tony's. It's at moments like this that I am so grateful to be sitting with theatrical legends. You'll see photos of Jason Alexander singing to Chita, with DeDe Wood on the left, Valarie, Carol and Carol, Carol Tippi Hedren and Mariette Hartley. And Lucie Arnaz was the most beautiful person on the Tonys! P.S. Alice Ripley, who won for "Next to Normal," clearly is NOT.

"Behind every great woman is herself," said Stewart Resnick as he introduced his wife, Lynda, at her book party recently. A while back Pom Queen and philanthropist Lynda gave a party for her friend Arianna Huffington, and this time Arianna returned the favor by co-hosting with Stewart to celebrate Lynda's new book, "Rubies in the Orchard: How to Uncover the Hidden Gems in Your Business."

"I first met Lynda 30 years ago at Joan Didiion's house," said Arianna, and we've been friends ever since. Her book is a sensational and inspiring marketing guide. Everyone should have it."
And the Lynda addressed the crown from high atop the mezzanine stairs in the grand foyer of LACMA. It was a little like Eva Peron from the balcony---very effective. "This is the best book party I've ever been to," said Lynda. "This has been a fabulous journey, and even though we are in tough times, we must always remember to become part of the family of man.
