CONGRATULATIONS DIONNE KIRSCHNER ON YOUR PRIMETIME EMMY NOMINATION
AND WHO IS DIONNE KIRSCHNER AND WHY AM I SO HAPPY ABOUT THIS?
Dionne is the FOURTH person in her family to receive an Emmy nomination--Producer of SCHOOL OF ROCK-Best Children's Program. Her grandfather was Danny Thomas. Her aunt is Marlo Thomas; her uncle is Tony Thomas---all Emmy people. Her mother is the wonderful Terre Thomas, who has devoted her life to St. Jude and recently received their Emeritus Award. These people are family to me.
AND, DIONNE, WAS MARLO'S INSPIRATION FOR THE EMMY AND PEABODY-WINNING SHOW, "FREE TO BE YOU AND ME." Unfortunately, or fortunately, I am old enough to remember baby Dionne, and the creation of that show. What a bright child she was, and what a talented, kind adult. Bravo, Dionne.
TODDLERS AND TIARAS STARTS ITS NEW SEASON ANY MINUTE---WHY??????
WHY IS THIS SHOW STILL ON?????
IT IS A HAVEN AND GIFT FOR CHILD PREDATORS AND PORNOGRAPHERS.
HEY, TLC---I GUESS YOUR RATINGS GAME IS WORTH THE CHANCE THAT MORE YOUNG GIRLS WILL BE MOLESTED, KIDNAPPED, MURDERED OR SOLD AS SEX SLAVES.
AND WHILE WE'RE AT IT---HEY PARENTS! YOU ARE THE ONES WHO ARE THE MOST RESPONSIBLE. It is YOU who create and provide the product. You are the ones who should go to jail as accessories.
Shame on all of you. These poor children are born innocent and pure, and are crafted into this by their parents.

LESLIE JONES...........LARRY AND SHAWN KING----THE INSANITY
LEAVE THIS GIRL ALONE!!!!!
WHAT IS THIS INSANITY where the "internet-bullying" world decides to target someone for no reason and hurt and disturb their life? First, she is brutally attacked for her looks---which is RIDICULOUS because she looks terrific. It was so bad that she had to cancel her accounts. And now she's hacked and nude pictures are put up??? And, yes, no one should have nude pics available on private accounts to be hacked. I know that. But as Whoopi Goldberg would say, "What the Hell?"
AND THIS ONE KILLS ME---LARRY KING IS "UPSET" THAT HIS WIFE, SHAWN IS (OR MAY BE) HAVING AN AFFAIR?
First, it has not been confirmed. BUT HAS EVERYONE FORGOTTEN, INCLUDING LARRY, THAT HE (allegedly) HAD AN AFFAIR WITH HER SISTER????????
Larry, the only words I have to say to you have four letters and they aren't love or lamp.
You are one...........m.............f.............

DEAR KHLOE. I HAVE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT LAMAR
DEAR KHLOE,
I HAVE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT LAMAR. You are a wonderful, loving woman, and I know how difficult it is to care about an alcoholic addict. You try so hard to "save" them. You keep talking to them about getting better and what to do in order to "save them.' You really mean well, and it's so hard when they don't take your advice because you are giving good, life-saving advice. You pick them up off the floor. You rush them to hospitals. AND THEY STILL DON'T LISTEN. THEY DON'T CHANGE.
Please know that it's not your fault. Please know that you can't change him. YOU CANT DO ANYTHING EXCEPT TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF, LET GO, AND PRAY FOR HIM.
I want you to have a beautiful, happy life. Step away now. You are not being selfish. The only person you can save is YOU.
I'll say a prayer for you.
Love,
Sue

THE WORLD'S HIGHEST-PAID ACTRESSES FOR 2016--JENNIFER LAWRENCE NO. 1
Jennifer Lawrence deserves every dime |
THESE MONEY FIGURES ARE SO HIGH THAT I THINK OF IT AS MONOPOLY MONEY. BUT, WE MUST REMEMBER THAT IT IS THE FACES AND WORK OF THESE WOMEN THAT PUT MONEY INTO THE POCKETS OF PRODUCERS AND STUDIOS. AND, THE STUDIOS AND PRODUCERS PROBABLY MAKE MUCH MORE. GO WOMEN POWER!
Jennifer
Lawrence is the world's highest-paid actress in 2016 for the second year
in a row, followed by Melissa McCarthy, who notched a big gain to claim
the runner-up spot, Forbes magazine reported on Tuesday. Lawrence,
the 26-year-old star of The Hunger Games franchise, has earned $46
million before taxes over 12 months, in part from a big upfront fee for
the forthcoming movie Passengers, Forbes said. In second place is Melissa McCarthy, who has $33 million in earnings. Scarlett Johansson of Captain America: Civil Wars was third at $25 million, down nearly 30 per cent from 2015.
The rest of the 2016 top 10 are:
4. Jennifer Aniston - $21 million----(Why?)
5. Fan Bingbing - $17 million
What is a Fan Bing Bing, you ask? Well, now you see her. She also has a sister, Li Bing Bing.
How do I know about the Bing Bings???? Beloved Joan Rivers started doing jokes about them on FASHION POLICE. We used to text each other about the Bing Bing happenings. You know---how many bangs in a Bing? Bing, Bang, Bong. Thins like that. Sigh.......

EXPERIENCING ADELE LIVE---MAKES YOU GRATEFUL TO BE ALIVE
LOOK AT THE JOY ON THIS FACE. THIS IS SOMEONE WHO LOVES WHAT SHE DOES AND LOVES TO SHARE IT WITH AUDIENCES.
Adele is the the hottest, most successful female singer in the world right now. She doesn't need back-up dancers. She doesn't need costume changes. She doesn't lip sync or need autotune. She doesn't need huge, changing sets or a chorus behind her. Her breasts don't need to fall out of costumes to get your attention. You know why? BECAUSE SHE HAS ACTUAL TALENT. Read this paragraph again, please.
The audience supplies the "lighting" |
I have had the privilege of seeing every female singer who has had a hit record since the 60s. Whether it was in a jazz club, the Whiskey on the Sunset Strip, Las Vegas, or arenas---I've seen them all.
The actual astonishing vocal instrument that can perform live without gimmicks, is a magnificent thing. Let's talk about Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Dusty Springfield, , Janis Joplin, and Phoebe Snow. I have known or knew them all. They are masters of being "in one," because they have the pure talent. I've left out "arena singers" Tina Turner, Bette Midler, Diana Ross and Cher. Love them all but......this is about pure vocal instruments.
To make this more contemporary for a moment, let's look at Ariana Grande. She has an amazing vocal instrument. In fact, she's the only really young one who does. She can stand there "in one" and hold you. But her handlers are too insecure to let her do that. They have packaged and homogenized her into certain oblivion. Her only was out is to fire them before it's too late. But back to Adele....
I have NEVER seen any solo female artist do in concert what Adele did at Staples. While she sings magnificent song after song, flawlessly.........she spends a great deal of time just talking to the audience. Some of it is rehearsed patter, to be sure, but she is totally authentic. She speaks like she's your best friend, your manicurist, your favorite salesgirl at Marks & Spencer........she is ONE with the audience. She is as happy to see you as you are to see her. She confides in you. She shows her flaws. She's humble, funny, grateful. She is a whole human being. She is a big star, but not stand-offish. She is everywoman and shoots holes in the theory that big stars are untouchable.
To see her on this tour is that rare moment in a star's career. It's not the first blush of recognition. It is that moment of the star's ascendance meeting the full power of what will be the most powerful time of her career. She has decades to go, of course, but NEVER will this confluence come again.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LESLEY ANN WARREN. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL PARTY!
LESLEY ANN WARREN REALLY IS "CINDERELLA." SHE LOOKS AT LIFE THROUGH ROSE-COLORED GLASSES, AND IS ALL ABOUT MAKING HAPPINESS A PRIORITY.
Her wonderful husband, award-winning graphic artist, Ron Taft, gave her an exquisite dinner party at Il Cielo. His theme was "Make Someone Happy," and at each place-setting was a pair of heart-shaped rose-colored glasses. It was also not lost on all of us that they were the same glasses Sue Lyon wore in "Lolita." "Cinderella" likes to be "bad," too!"
Right before the cake, Ron arranged for Jimmy Durante's recording of "Make Someone Happy" to be played, and we all sang along---TWICE!
We all LOVED those glasses!!!!
We had beautiful smoked salmon hors d'oeuvres, followed by a mushroom ravioli appetizer, a lightly-dressed green salad, chicken or salmon with couscous, and then THAT cake!
Lesley is one of the most loving human beings I've ever known. She and all her friends have amazing reciprocal friendships. What a blessing. The room was filled with so
much love.
SUSIECAKES is Lesley's favorite bakery. We had the classic marble cake with chocolate chocolate chip filling and white buttercream icing. Thank you, God...and Ron.
Was Lesley happy about the cake?????
Judge for yourself!!!!

I MISS CHASEN'S RESTAURANT. FEELING NOSTALGIC TODAY
CHASEN'S IS THE GREATEST RESTAURANT HOLLYWOOD EVER HAD
I SPENT DECADES OF MY LIFE HERE. I WENT AT LEAST TWICE A MONTH WITH MY PARENTS, AND ALSO HAD EVERY BIRTHDAY HERE UNTIL IT CLOSED, WHICH, BY THE WAY, WAS THE NIGHT AFTER MY BIRTHDAY IN 1995.
When I went with my parents, who'd been coming since the 40s when it was on the Sunset Strip serving just chili, the red carpet was rolled out for them. When I got my column in the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, it was rolled out for me. I enjoyed earning it in my own right.
( I will, of course, never forget my 30th birthday. I had the bright idea to have my divorced mother and father and their spouses ALL at dinner. Big mistake. Could barely digest my food.)
I loved Tommy, Ronnie and John. When the closing was announced, I made a weekly reservation to be there until the last night. I worked a deal with John. I needed his help You see, I was determined to have a complete Chasen's service for four by the time it closed. Indeed, I have the full complement of plates, silverware, napkins--even the sugar and creamers. God Bless You, John. And I use them!
Chasen's was family. I was a little child, but I do remember Dave and Maude. I was there when stars who were real stars dined there. It was thrilling. It was like a private club that only success could get you into, and even THAT success was measured by where you sat and who was your captain. I never cared whether I was in the room on the right or the left, as long as it was the front room. And, it always was.
I was so at home there, that when BEVERLY HILLS 213 asked me to be on their cover to celebrate my first novel, I asked that it be shot in one of my favorite booths. I think, in terms of career, that was the happiest and proudest I've ever been.
There will never be another Steak Diane like theirs, or a Banana Shortcake, or Creamed Spinach. I don't care what trendy restaurant is hot right now. When they last 60 years, I may be impressed.

FROM LOS ANGELES MAGAZINE--the usual history for those who don't know.
If you moved to Los Angeles after 1995, you may not know about Chasen’s—although the restaurant had the stuff Hollywood legends are made of. Located at 9039 Beverly Boulevard near Beverly Hills, Chasen’s opened in December 1936 and quickly became the culinary hangout of Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Lana Turner, and Groucho Marx. Jimmy Stewart held his bachelor party here, Howard Hughes was seen constantly on the house phone, Alfred Hitchcock routinely fell asleep at his table. After Johnny Carson won his third Emmy in as many years, he took all of the show’s insiders for a celebratory dinner at Chasen’s. Donna Summer wrote her hit “She Works Hard For the Money” on toilet paper in the bathroom—that was Chasen’s for you.
The restaurant, which was run by Maude Chasen and her husband Dave until his death in 1973, focused on hearty American/Continental cuisine and became as famous for its colossal seafood platters, hobo steak, a buffet that offered beluga caviar, and delicious cheese toast appetizers as its clientele. When Elizabeth Taylor was filming Cleopatra in Rome she craved their chili so much that she reportedly had her studio pay big bucks to have it shipped to Italy twice a month. For years the recipe remained a closely guarded secret, David Chasen was rumored to come the restaurant every Sunday to privately cook up a batch for the week.

NATE PARKER---I THINK YOU'RE LYING. YOU RAPED THAT GIRL--JUST MY OPINION
'BIRTH OF A NATION' SCANDAL ERUPTS FOR DIRECTOR AND STAR, NATE PARKER
MY OPINION: IF IT WALKS LIKE A DUCK, AND TALKS LIKE A DUCK...IT'S A DUCK!
Her older brother told Variety that she committed suicide and overdosed on sleeping pills. “She became detached from reality,” the woman’s brother, Johnny, told Variety, asking not to use his last name to honor his sister’s wishes to remain anonymous. “The progression was very quick and she took her life.”
The news comes just days after Parker gave interviews last week to Variety and Deadline about being charged with rape as a student at Penn State. He was acquitted in a 2001 trial, but questions about the case persist.
“He may have litigated out of any kind of situation,” Johnny said. “My position is he got off on a technicality.” Other family members reached by Variety declined to publicly comment.
There’s no evidence that the woman’s death was directly linked to the trial. She died at a drug rehabilitation facility, where she was found unresponsive by staff with two 100-count pill bottles of an over-the-counter sleep aid with ingredients similar to Benadryl by her side. “It’s just a horrible life’s progression,” the coroner told Variety. “She was a young woman.”
In court, she testified that she had attempted to kill herself twice after the reported rape. Her brother said that she suffered from depression after the incident. Her death certificate, obtained by Variety, stated that she suffered from “major depressive disorder with psychotic features, PTSD due to physical and sexual abuse, polysubstance abuse….”
“If I were to look back at her very short life and point to one moment where I think she changed as a person, it was obviously that point,” Johnny told Variety. He said that prior to entering college, his sister was an outgoing, popular girl who loved animals and school. He envisioned a career in marketing or media for her. “The trial was pretty tough for her,” he said.
In 1999, Parker, a student and wrestler at Penn State, and his roommate Jean Celestin (the co-writer of “The Birth of a Nation”) were charged with raping the 18-year old female in their apartment after a night of drinking. The woman claimed she was unconscious at the time, while Parker and Celestin maintained that the encounter was consensual. She later said that she was stalked and harassed by Parker and Celestin after she reported the incident. “She was afraid for her life,” her brother said. Both men were suspended from the wrestling team, and Parker transferred to a different college in Oklahoma.
A jury acquitted Parker of the charges, in part because of testimony that he had consensual sex with the victim prior to the incident. Celestin was found guilty of sexual assault and sentenced to six months of prison. Celestin appealed the verdict and was granted a new trial in 2005, but the case never made it back to court after the victim decided not to testify again.
The brother believes that if the trial had been held today, there would have been a different verdict. “I think by today’s legal standards, a lot has changed with regards to universities and the laws in sexual assault,” he said. “I feel certain if this were to happen in 2016, the outcome would be different than it was. Courts are a lot stricter about this kind of thing. You don’t touch someone who is so intoxicated — period.”
After the trial, the victim left college before graduating, and received a settlement from Penn State of $17,500. “She was trying to find happiness,” Johnny said. “She moved around frequently and tried to hold a job. She had a boyfriend. She gave birth to a young boy. That brought her a good bit of happiness. I think the ghosts continued to haunt her.”
Looking back, he doesn’t think that Penn State did its part to keep his 18-year-old sister safe. “I must admit Penn State has a horrendous record,” he said, referring to the former football coach at the University convicted of molesting children. “And Jerry Sandusky is just the tip of the iceberg. The University has a history of protecting [athletes].”
The Nate Parker trial is being re-examined now because of the public attention on “The Birth of a Nation,” which Fox Searchlight bought for a record $17.5 million out of last January’s Sundance Film Festival. When the movie first screened, it was crowned as an Oscar frontrunner, but the film’s release strategy has come into question in light of the recent allegations. Sources say that the senior executives at Fox Searchlight are monitoring press reports about the case, and are debating whether it is still possible to release the movie with a roadshow that would have Parker traveling to churches and college campuses talking about social injustice, which one of the conditions of the Sundance sale.
“His character should be under a microscope because of this incident,” Johnny said. “If you removed these two people, the project is commendable. But there’s a moral and ethical stance you would expect from someone with regard to this movie.”
Asked if the movie should be released, he responded: “I think that’s up to the people,” Johnny said. “I don’t think a rapist should be celebrated. It’s really a cultural decision we’re making as a society to go to the theater and speak with our dollars and reward a sexual predator.”
Parker did not directly speak about the victim when he addressed the issue last week. “Seventeen years ago, I experienced a very painful moment in my life,” Parker told Variety. “It resulted in it being litigated. I was cleared of it. That’s that. Seventeen years later, I’m a filmmaker. I have a family. I have five beautiful daughters. I have a lovely wife. I get it. The reality is I can’t relive 17 years ago. All I can do is be the best man I can be now.”
In a statement last week, the studio said: “Fox Searchlight is aware of the incident that occurred while Nate Parker was at Penn State. We also know that he was found innocent and cleared of all charges. We stand behind Nate and are proud to help bring this important and powerful story to the screen.”
Johnny said that the family has tried to move on from this tragedy. “It’s hard,” he said, “seeing my sister’s life slowly crumble while these men are by all accounts relatively successful and thriving.”
“It’s been 17 years,” he added. “We certainly as a family forgive them. I don’t know that [the victim] would forgive them. I don’t think that she would.”
THESE KINDS OF STORIES ARE SO COMMON ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES, AND MOST PERPETRATORS EITHER GET AWAY TOTALLY, OR JUST GET A SLAP ON THE WRIST.

Nate Parker’s Rape Accuser Committed Suicide in 2012: Her Brother Speaks Out
FROM: THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
The woman who accused “The Birth of a Nation” director and star Nate Parker of raping her while they were both Penn State students died in 2012 at age 30, according to family members and public records. Her older brother told Variety that she committed suicide and overdosed on sleeping pills. “She became detached from reality,” the woman’s brother, Johnny, told Variety, asking not to use his last name to honor his sister’s wishes to remain anonymous. “The progression was very quick and she took her life.”

MAKS AND VAL--OUR WAY
MAKS AND VAL--OUR WAY---Their touring show came to L.A. over the weekend. It is backed and presented by Live Nation, the same company that backs Derek and Julianne Hough's concert tour. While Derek and Julianne's is "big arena Vegas-Ready" with tons of flash and slick numbers, Maks and Val's show is deliberately different. Theirs is more "homey" and personal. They want us to see their story of immigrants coming to America with nothing, and working hard to get where they are It is very inspiring and sweet. There are even home movies showing their father talking about how he raised them.
Their dancing is, as you would expect, sensational. Their troupe of dancers, magnificent. As Val says, "These are not back-up dancers. They are our friends and successful in their own right."
The numbers they do fit the narrative of their life stories. I like that. It is excellent for this first concert tour to introduce themselves more fully. Their next tour needs to morph into more present day and have even more extraordinary dance numbers. I'm sure they know that. What was also fun, was that the dance styles they used--jive, samba, paso doble, etc were spelled out on screens while they were doing it. That worked. This was an introductory show to everything.
-->
HERE'S THE INTERVIEW: They
brought up some surprising inspirations for their show, including Lin-Manuel
Miranda’s “Hamilton” and John Leguizamo’s solo Broadway show “Ghetto Klown.”
Q:
What is this tour about?
Maks:
It took, what, Val? Thirty years in the making, I guess. It’s our story about
how we came up, did what we’re doing now, how we got to where we are at the
moment. We feel our story is not unusual. There are a lot of people out there
that go through the same set of obstacles and maybe lose hope at one point or
another.
We want to entertain, but we also want
to inspire. … We want to say that what you may be going through isn’t unusual.
We’ve done it, too. There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. We’ve gone
through a decade and a half of very tough, tough times and having fun now.
Val:
We want to celebrate our relationship as brothers. We want to celebrate our
parents motivating us and grooming us in the right direction. … We want to
explain how we got to be who we are and some of the antics, some of the unusual
sentence-building, and stuff like that.
Q:
You must be close as brothers.
Maks:
We grew up really tight. We grew up in a small family but with a lot of Mom and
Dad constantly telling us: “When we die, you’re the only two who will have each
other, you shouldn’t fight” and all that. So I think we kind of got brainwashed
into loving each other, for sure.

EDGAR ROSENBERG-- AUG. 14, 1987
I LOVED EDGAR ROSENBERG DEEPLY. HE WAS A SPECTACULAR MAN.
HE WASN'T JUST JOAN RIVERS' HUSBAND, OR MELISSA'S FATHER.
HE WAS EDGAR ROSENBERG, THE MAN.
On August 14, 1987, 29 years ago, I was resting at Kim Novak's house in Carmel. My phone rang and I heard her husband telling me that Joan Rivers' husband had killed himself. I can't even describe what I felt. All I knew was that I had to get to Joan and Melissa.
Fortunately, I had a friend at United Airlines. Not only did he book a flight for me, but he met me at the airport and went with me. I was too upset to function. I went directly to Joan's home from the airport.
She was seated in the English-style library/den that I associated with Edgar. It was his hideaway. We looked at each other and barely spoke. A dark emotional fog filled the room.
I'm not going to go on and on with the entire story, because it's in my book that I'm writing. Some of the story you will be able to read in a biography on Joan by VANITY FAIR'S brilliant Leslie Bennetts. I spent a lot of time with her making sure she knew who Edgar really was.
Edgar was a brilliant, erudite, sophisticated gentleman. He had a sardonic wit, and many times was funnier than Joan. Most of his lines were delivered under his breath, so I always sat as close to him as I could. He was very successful before he met Joan, and because he loved her so much, he devoted more time to her career than to his. ANYONE WHO THINKS HE WAS SOME KIND OF HANGER-ON STOOGE IS AN IDIOT. Joan could make jokes about Edgar. Anyone else who does will have to talk to me.
Edgar and I had our own separate friendship. We would have dinners away from everyone, usually at Peppone's in Brentwood. I will treasure them forever.
When things were getting rough at Joan's late night Fox TV show, it took a toll on Edgar's health. He had heart issues, an ulcer, and gout toward the end of that show. One night, when I was at the show, I was so disturbed by his appearance that I pushed him into a back-stage bathroom and asked, "What's the matter with you? I'm really worried." He told me about his ailments and how he didn't feel well, and assured me the doctors were on it.
WHAT I DIDN'T KNOW AT THE TIME, WAS THAT HE WAS ON SO MUCH MEDICATION THAT IT COMBINED BADLY AND THREW HIM INTO A MEDICAL DEPRESSION. BACK THEN, DOCTORS DID NOT TALK TO EACH OTHER ABOUT WHAT WAS PRESCRIBED AND POSSIBLE INTERACTION PROBLEMS.
Weeks later, I was at Le Dome for lunch and I saw him at another table. He came over and said hello. But then he said, "I want you to promise me something. Promise me that if anything ever happens that you will watch out for Melissa."
"Of course," I answered, a little thrown, very touched, but not really thinking about the deeper meaning or the warning bells that should have gone off.
We all know the ending. And there will be more to come from me on my dear Edgar.

A LETTER FROM THE HARVARD REPUBLICAN CLUB----
Here’s the Harvard Republican Club’s statement:
Dear Members and Alumni,
In every presidential election since 1888, the members and Executive Board of the Harvard Republican Club have gathered to discuss, debate, and eventually endorse the standard-bearer of our party. But for the first time in 128 years, we, the oldest College Republicans chapter in the nation, will not be endorsing the Republican nominee.
Donald Trump holds views that are antithetical to our values not only as Republicans, but as Americans. The rhetoric he espouses –from racist slander to misogynistic taunts– is not consistent with our conservative principles, and his repeated mocking of the disabled and belittling of the sacrifices made by prisoners of war, Gold Star families, and Purple Heart recipients is not only bad politics, but absurdly cruel.
If enacted, Donald Trump’s platform would endanger our security both at home and abroad. Domestically, his protectionist trade policies and draconian immigration restrictions would enlarge our federal deficit, raise prices for consumers, and throw our economy back into recession. Trump’s global outlook, steeped in isolationism, is considerably out-of-step with the traditional Republican stance as well. The flippancy with which he is willing to abdicate the United States’ responsibility to lead is alarming. Calling for the US’ withdrawal from NATO and actively endorsing nuclear proliferation, Donald Trump’s foreign policy would wreak havoc on the established world order which has held aggressive foreign powers in check since World War II.
Perhaps most importantly, however, Donald Trump simply does not possess the temperament and character necessary to lead the United States through an increasingly perilous world. The last week should have made obvious to all what has been obvious to most for more than a year. In response to any slight –perceived or real– Donald Trump lashes out viciously and irresponsibly. In Trump’s eyes, disagreement with his actions or his policies warrants incessant name calling and derision: stupid, lying, fat, ugly, weak, failing, idiot –and that’s just his “fellow” Republicans.
He isn’t eschewing political correctness. He is eschewing basic human decency.
Donald Trump, despite spending more than a year on the campaign trail, has either refused or been unable to educate himself on issues that matter most to Americans like us. He speaks only in platitudes, about greatness, success, and winning. Time and time again, Trump has demonstrated his complete lack of knowledge on critical matters, meandering from position to position over the course of the election. When confronted about these frequent reversals, Trump lies in a manner more brazen and shameless than anything politics has ever seen.
Millions of people across the country are feeling despondent. Their hours have been cut, wages slashed, jobs even shipped overseas. But Donald Trump doesn’t have a plan to fix that. He has a plan to exploit that.
Donald Trump is a threat to the survival of the Republic. His authoritarian tendencies and flirtations with fascism are unparalleled in the history of our democracy. He hopes to divide us by race, by class, and by religion, instilling enough fear and anxiety to propel himself to the White House. He is looking to to pit neighbor against neighbor, friend against friend, American against American. We will not stand for this vitriolic rhetoric that is poisoning our country and our children.
President Reagan called on us to maintain this, our shining city on a hill. He called on us to maintain freedom abroad by keeping a strong presence in the world. He called on us to maintain liberty at home by upholding the democratic process and respecting our opponents. He called on us to maintain decency in our hearts by loving our neighbor.
He would be ashamed of Donald Trump. We are too.
This fall, we will instead focus our efforts on reclaiming the Republican Party from those who have done it considerable harm, campaigning for candidates who will uphold the conservative principles that have defined the Republican Party for generations. We will work to ensure both chambers of Congress remain in Republican hands, continuing to protect against executive overreach regardless of who wins the election this November.
We call on our party’s elected leaders to renounce their support of Donald Trump, and urge our fellow College Republicans to join us in condemning and withholding their endorsement from this dangerous man. The conservative movement in America should not and will not go quietly into the night.
A longtime student of American democracy, Alexis de Tocqueville once said, “America is great because she is good. If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”
De Tocqueville believed in the United States. Americans are a decent people. We work hard, protect our own, and look out for one another in times of need, regardless of the color of our skin, the God we worship, or our party registration. Donald Trump may not believe in that America, but we do. And that America will never cease to be great.
